HUBZone Certification is an SBA federal registration that designates your business qualification as operating in a historically underutilized business zone (HUBZone), with at least 35% of your employees also living within a HUBZone designated area.

The purpose of the HUBZone Certification is to provide contracting opportunities for businesses located in
economically depressed or rural areas to stimulate business growth and job creation.

The SBA goal across all federal agencies is 3% of procurement spending specifically with HUBZone Certified business.
Last year, the federal government awarded $14.3 Billion to HUBZone businesses, (or 2.5%) falling short of their goal.

HUBZone Eligibility

SBA Qualification Criteria:

  • Business has to qualify for SBA small business status.

  • At least 51% owned, operated, and controlled by a U.S. citizen(s), or a Community Development Corp, and Agricultural Cooperative, or an Native American Indian Tribe.

  • Have your principal office location within a "Historically Underutilized Business Zone," which includes lands considered 'Indian Country' and military facilities closed by the Base Realignment and Closure Act.

  • At least 35% of the business's employees must reside within a HUBZone.

  • HUBZone locations are determined based on income level, unemployment rate, and other demographic information for geographic areas.

How can I find out if my business and employees are located /reside in a HUBZone?
Go to the official SBA HUBZone Map. Type the address in the search bar to determine of the location is in a HUBZone.
Am I eligible for HUBZone certification if I recently started my business?
Yes, HUBZone Certification guidelines do not preclude emerging or start-up businesses from being certified, as long as you meet the eligibility requirements and provide the necessary documentation.
Is there a submission fee paid to the SBA for the HUBZone Certification?
No, there is no fee paid directly to the SBA for HUBZone certification. Any fees paid to third parties are for document preparation, review, submission, and responses on behalf of the business.
I am a resident alien/green card holder, am I eligible for HUBZone Certification?
No, unfortunately not. Resident aliens or green cardholders do not qualify to for HUBZone Certification.
Does my HUBZone Certification have to be renewed periodically?
Yes, your HUBZone Certification has to be recertified annually with the SBA. There is no limit to the length of time a business can participate as long as it continues to qualify. A program examination will be required at least every three years.
How do I know if I am qualified for small business status with the SBA?
